Update on Meatco Foundation activities for 2020

The Meatco Foundation is supporting producers and stakeholders in various projects.

The Foundation is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of Meatco, which contributes to the development, growth and livelihood of Namibian communal farmers.

The Foundation aims to improve Namibia’s communal livestock farmers’ livelihoods through capacity building and sustainable development interventions.

Executive: Meatco Foundation, Kuniberth Shamathe, says the Foundation is building crush pens in the Gam and Eiseb Block areas. Once these projects are complete, they will improve the livelihoods of the farmers there and the communities and provide marketing platforms. Previously, the Foundation has facilitated and constructed several crush pens at Helena, Omuramba and Okangoho, significantly improving the livelihoods of communities in these areas.

"In addition, we are conducting various studies aimed at improving the plight of farmers. We are conducting a feasibility study on the proposed new Veterinary Cordon Fence Zone in the Northern Communal Areas. We have completed stakeholder consultations and data collection already and the report is due for submission by the end of August 2020,” Shamathe says.

The foundation is also running several other projects ranging from rangeland support and business support development of cooperatives mainly aimed at assisting farmers.
